When a tooth cannot be saved, our experienced team ensures your extraction is as comfortable, safe and stress-free as possible — with full aftercare support throughout your recovery.
Compassionate care when extraction is the right solution
While our team always aims to preserve your natural teeth wherever possible, there are situations where tooth extraction is the safest and most appropriate treatment option. Our priority at Wickham Market Dental is to make the procedure as comfortable, dignified and straightforward as possible.
Using modern local anaesthetic techniques and a gentle, patient-focused approach, the vast majority of extractions are completely pain-free during the procedure. Our experienced clinical team will talk you through every step, answer your questions and ensure you feel fully prepared and at ease before we begin.
Following your extraction, we provide detailed aftercare advice and discuss suitable tooth replacement options — including dental implants, bridges and dentures — so you can make an informed choice about restoring your smile.
When a tooth is severely decayed, infected or damaged beyond repair, extraction provides immediate relief from ongoing dental pain and prevents the infection from spreading further.
Removing a failing tooth protects surrounding teeth and gum tissue from infection and damage, safeguarding the long-term health of your mouth.
All extractions are carried out under effective local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure and movement but no pain. We can also discuss sedation options for particularly anxious patients.
Our dentists are experienced in both routine and surgical extractions and approach every patient with empathy, patience and professionalism to minimise anxiety and discomfort.
We provide full written and verbal aftercare instructions following every extraction, and our team is always available to answer questions or concerns during your recovery.
We discuss your options for replacing the extracted tooth — including dental implants, bridges and dentures — so you can restore your smile and chewing function as soon as appropriate.
Our team always explores every option to save your natural tooth first. Extraction is recommended when:

We examine the affected tooth and take a digital X-ray to assess the root structure, surrounding bone and the position of any nerves. This allows us to plan the safest and most efficient removal.
We talk you through the procedure, explain what to expect, answer any questions and obtain your informed consent. If you feel anxious, please tell us — we can discuss additional measures to help you feel at ease.
We apply a topical numbing gel before administering the local anaesthetic injection to minimise any discomfort. We always wait until the area is fully numb before proceeding.
Using specialist instruments, we gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket. For more complex surgical extractions (e.g. impacted wisdom teeth), an incision may be made in the gum. The procedure is quick once the area is fully numb.
Once the tooth is removed, we may place a small piece of gauze to help blood clotting. We provide detailed written aftercare instructions covering pain management, swelling, diet, activity and warning signs to watch for.
We arrange a follow-up appointment to check healing and discuss tooth replacement options. Preserving the space and replacing the tooth promptly helps prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting.
Tooth extraction is available on both NHS and private basis. NHS Band pricing applies for NHS-registered patients.

Answers to the questions our patients ask most often.
The procedure itself should be completely pain-free thanks to effective local anaesthetic. You may feel pressure and movement, but not pain. After the anaesthetic wears off, there will be some soreness and swelling for a few days which is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen and paracetamol.
