Root canal treatment eliminates infection, relieves severe toothache and saves your natural tooth. Modern techniques and effective anaesthesia make this procedure far more comfortable than you might expect.
Gentle, effective treatment to save your natural tooth
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is a procedure used to treat infection or inflammation within the root canal system of a tooth. Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed — due to deep decay, a cracked tooth or dental trauma — root canal treatment is required.
The procedure involves carefully removing the infected or inflamed pulp, cleaning and shaping the root canals, and sealing them to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored with a crown or large filling to return it to full function.
At Wickham Market Dental Practice, we use modern rotary endodontic techniques and ensure complete local anaesthesia before beginning. The vast majority of patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is — typically no more so than having a routine filling.
Root canal treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted. Natural teeth are always preferable — they maintain jaw bone, adjacent teeth alignment and bite function.
Infected dental pulp causes severe, debilitating pain. Root canal treatment removes the source of the infection and pain, typically providing immediate and lasting relief.
Left untreated, a dental abscess can spread to surrounding teeth, jaw bone and beyond. Root canal treatment stops the infection at source, protecting your overall health.
Root canal treatment has a success rate of over 95% when performed by an experienced practitioner using modern techniques. A well-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
Root canal treatment is available on the NHS under Band 2 treatment, making it accessible to all registered NHS patients at Wickham Market Dental Practice.
Modern rotary instrumentation and superior local anaesthesia techniques make root canal treatment a well-tolerated procedure. Most patients feel no pain throughout.

Your dentist examines the tooth, assesses your symptoms and takes X-rays to evaluate the extent of the infection and the anatomy of the root canals. A treatment plan is discussed and your consent is obtained.
Effective local anaesthetic is administered to ensure you feel completely comfortable throughout the procedure. We take time to ensure full numbness before proceeding — your comfort is our priority.
A small opening is made through the crown of the tooth to access the root canal system. The infected or inflamed pulp tissue is gently removed using fine specialist instruments.
The root canals are carefully cleaned, shaped and disinfected using rotary endodontic files and antimicrobial irrigants. This step is critical to removing all bacteria and infected tissue.
Once cleaned and shaped, the canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent future bacterial entry. A temporary or permanent filling is placed above.
Following root canal treatment, the tooth usually requires a crown to protect it from fracture. A permanent restoration is fitted at a subsequent appointment to ensure the tooth is fully functional.

Answers to the questions our patients ask most often.
This is the most common misconception about root canal treatment. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no pain during the treatment itself. In fact, root canal treatment relieves the severe toothache caused by the infection. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is.
