About This Treatment

What Is a Dental Crown?

The most comprehensive tooth restoration available

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crafted from high-quality dental porcelain, zirconia or ceramic, crowns are designed to look, feel and function exactly like your natural teeth.

Crowns are recommended when a tooth is too damaged or decayed for a filling to provide sufficient support, after root canal treatment, when a tooth is fractured or cracked, or when significant cosmetic improvement is needed. A well-fitted crown can restore complete chewing function and protect the tooth from further damage for many years.

At Wickham Market Dental Practice, we use premium materials and precise digital or conventional impression techniques to ensure every crown fits perfectly and blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Benefits

Why Patients Choose This Treatment

Protects Vulnerable Teeth

A crown encases the entire tooth, protecting cracked, weakened or root-treated teeth from fracture and further deterioration.

Restores Full Function

Crowns restore the full biting and chewing ability of damaged teeth, allowing you to eat normally and comfortably again.

Natural Appearance

Modern all-ceramic and zirconia crowns are shade-matched to blend seamlessly with adjacent teeth, creating a completely natural-looking result.

Long-Lasting

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a quality crown can last 10–15 years or longer, making it a durable long-term solution.

NHS Available

Crowns are available under NHS treatment where clinically necessary. Private crowns using premium ceramic or zirconia offer superior aesthetics and longevity.

Saves Your Natural Tooth

Rather than extracting a severely compromised tooth, a crown allows you to keep your natural root and tooth structure — always the preferred clinical option.

Suitability

When Is a Crown Recommended?

Your dentist may recommend a dental crown if you have:

A tooth with extensive decay too large for a filling
A cracked or fractured tooth at risk of further splitting
A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
A heavily worn tooth due to grinding (bruxism)
A broken or fragmented tooth following trauma
An existing large filling that has failed or fractured
A cosmetically compromised tooth requiring complete reshaping
A dental implant requiring a visible crown restoration

The Process

Your Treatment Journey

We guide you through every stage — from your first consultation to your final result.

1

Assessment & Treatment Planning

20–30 minutes

Your dentist examines the tooth thoroughly, including X-rays to assess the root and surrounding bone. We discuss the best crown material for your situation and obtain your consent and NHS/private preference.

2

Tooth Preparation

45–60 minutes

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to create space for the crown. The amount removed depends on the crown type. An impression (conventional or digital scan) is taken of the prepared tooth and sent to our laboratory.

3

Temporary Crown

15 minutes

A temporary crown is fitted to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being fabricated. The temporary crown maintains your bite and appearance for 2–3 weeks.

4

Laboratory Fabrication

2–3 weeks

Your custom crown is crafted by specialist dental technicians using your chosen material — porcelain, zirconia or ceramic. Each crown is shaped, layered and finished to precise specifications.

5

Fitting & Cementation

30–45 minutes

The temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is tried in, checked for fit, bite and appearance. Once you are satisfied, it is permanently cemented in place. Any final adjustments are made to ensure perfect comfort.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions our patients ask most often.

With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and avoiding habits like nail-biting or chewing ice, a quality crown can last 10–15 years or more. Zirconia crowns are particularly durable. The crown itself does not decay, but the underlying tooth and gum tissue still need to be maintained.
